At the i14y Lab, Rohde & Schwarz, VIAVI and Benetel combined their industry-leading capabilities to showcase their integrated, automated testing solution for the conformance testing of O-RAN radio units (O-RUs). This solution was used to test the commercial grade 4T4R RAN650 O-RU from Benetel according to O-RAN ALLIANCE and 3GPP specifications.

Together with the R&S®SMW200A vector signal generator and the R&S®FSVA3000 signal and spectrum analyzer, this setup provides a cost-efficient solution for 5G RF characterization tests. At the recent O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFest Fall 2023 at the Japan Open Testing and Integration Center (OTIC) hosted by Rakuten Mobile, Rohde & Schwarz and VIAVI Solutions have presented their integrated solution for automated conformance testing of O-RAN Radio Units (O-RUs). With their joint test solution, which combines both companies’ industry-leading capabilities, they performed the automated verification of a commercial O-RU provided by NEC according to both O-RAN and 3GPP pre-conformance specifications.

The European OTIC in Berlin at the i14y Lab finalized their first successful certification of an O-RAN radio unit according to O-RAN ALLIANCE. The i14y Lab has relied on the integrated solution for O-RU conformance testing by Rohde & Schwarz and VIAVI.

The signal conditioning in the RF front-end of signal analyzers is crucial to achieve the best performance with respect to image-suppression, noise-floor, dynamic range and other RF-key parameters.Precise signal levelling is especially important for complex measurements like Error-Vector-Magnitude (EVM). To minimize the measurement uncertainty from test system contributions over a wide range of different levels, the RF front-end needs to be adapted continuously according to the signal characteristics, signal power and frequency - ideally using an automatic levelling algorithm.This document describes the approach of a waveform specific, on-site characterization of the signal analyzer: For each waveform and frequency of interest, the instrument is evaluated in a first step. With this additional data, a fast and repeatable auto-levelling can be performed during the actual measurement.
