Until now, all devices on a 5G network shared the same bandwidth. In order to assign less ressources and bandwidth to RedCap devices, network can use specific bandwidth parts. High bandwidth for complex devices and lower bandwidth for devices with reduced capabilities. This optimizes the effectiveness of private networks.
Other key differences between 5G eMBB and RedCap in Release 17 are a peak data rate of only around 100 Mbps, mostly one antenna and one downlink layer and a 64 QAM downlink modulation.
The main benefits of these reduced capabilities are reduced complexity and therefore lower device costs, longer battery life and faster testing.
The different RedCap network conditions can be tested and simulated with the R&S®CMX500 OBT lite.
