RedCap

Opening 5G Capabilities to a New Class of Devices

Today, a whole range of wireless products, from consumer wearables to industrial sensors to video surveillance devices need faster connectivity but do not require the full capabilities and performance enabled by the 5G New Radio (NR) standard. Instead, these devices need smaller, less complex, lower-cost RF solutions with better battery life than existing 5G offerings can support. Until now.

The recent 3GPP Release 17 introduced a new feature that makes it possible for these simpler, lower-cost IoT devices to take advantage of the many benefits of 5G NR. Known as Reduced Capability, or RedCap, these IoT devices can now use fewer antennas and support lower bandwidths, which translates to reduced power consumption and device costs, making it possible for a whole new range of devices to reap the many benefits of 5G.

RedCap Benefits:

  • Improved Performance
  • Reduced Complexity
  • Lower Device Costs
  • Longer Battery Life
  • Faster Testing
