Security screening for correctional facilities

Prison security is essential for ensuring the safety and order within correctional facilities. This involves implementing a variety of physical access measures and protocols to control contraband and threat objects and protect the well-being of inmates, visitors, and staff.

Modern correctional facility security is a complex operation that combines both physical and technological elements to conduct searches of individuals entering the premises or inmates moving between different sections.

Innovations in technology have led to the introduction of more sophisticated methods to minimize the risks associated with contraband and other makeshift threat objects, thus enhancing security. Previously used primarily in airport security, millimeterwave (mmWave) body scanners are now available for other sectors and use cases, such as prison security screening.

Meet the R&S®QPS - the new standard for security in correctional facilities. With an exceptionally high scan resolution, this scanner is ideal for preventing threats and contraband from entering or moving within prisons.

The R&S®QPS uses millimeterwave (mmWave) ultra-high definition advanced imaging technology to detect all kinds of metallic and non-metallic objects - from drugs to weapons and even mini-Bluetooth® phones – to meet the specific security requirements of correctional facilities. The system is not limited to a list of particular objects but uses Deep Learning to look for general anomalies to discover novel threats.

R&S®QPS security scanners are used in many high-security facilities worldwide. Current customers include the Swiss Armed Forces Logistics Organisation (AFLO), the Norwegian Correctional Service (KDI) and the state and federal level correctional facilities in the US.

Challenges of security screening in correctional facilities

There are several core challenges for correctional facility security screening:

  • Detecting small, concealed objects: Small concealed contraband and prohibited items such as drugs, phones, blades and benign objects that can be used as or fashioned into weapons can be difficult to detect, whether they are metallic or non-metallic.
  • Managing peak times: During shift changes of prison staff and visitor hours an increased volume of people need to be screened in a timely manner to avoid queuing while ensuring safety.
  • Enabling non-intrusive visitor screening: Finding a balance between ensuring security and respecting the visitors’ rights is crucial. Manual searches can be invasive for visitors, such as lawyers and inmate family members.
  • Future-proof technology: Evolving threats from non-metallic items require state-of-the-art screening solutions, while ensuring the use of safe non-ionizing screening technology.

High-performance screening for prison security

With advanced mmWave technology and AI-based algorithms, the R&S®QPS detects contraband and dangerous objects at market-leading speed and resolution.

The security scanners’ detection algorithms can be trained and optimized to ignore common alarm items such as badges, name tags, belts or other items that are part of correctional staff uniforms. On the other hand, they can also be trained to enhance detection of specific items of interest or threat objects made from any material, metallic, non-metallic, powders, liquids, etc.

Designed for high-throughput environments, the systems’ highly accurate automated detection algorithms reduce the number of screeners required as well as the reliance on operator training and discernment of contraband and items of interest to screen the volume of daily visitors and staff.

The R&S®QPS Server is the central security management system for the R&S®QPS scanners. It provides a centralized overview of all scanners in a facility or across a city, county or state facilities. The software incorporates performance analysis and provides visibility into contraband detected, scanner utilization/performance and other screening and operational metrics. It can also be used for data backup.
