Chief Scientist of 6G, CTO Wireless Research at China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI)

Dr. Guangyi Liu, Chief Scientist of 6G in China Mobile Communication Corporation (CMCC), founding member and co-chair of the 6G Alliance of Network AI (6GANA), Vice chair of THz industry alliance in China, vice chair of the wireless technology working group of IMT-2030 (6G) promotion group supported by Ministry of Information and Industry Technology of China. He is leading the 6G R&D in CMCC since 2018. He has led the R&D of 4G’s evolution and 5G in CMCC during 2006~2020. He has acted as spectrum working group chair and project coordinator of LTE evolution and 5G eMBB in Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) from 2013~2020 and led the industrialization and globalization of TD-LTE evolution and 5G eMBB.

Talk 1: XR Evolution from 5G to 6G

Amira’s work at Qualcomm is at the leading edge of 5G Advanced and 6G research, including the setup of the 5G/6G innovation platform project in Lannion France, as integrating the Qualcomm global R&D engagements on XR, IOT, Automotive, Private Networks and NTN trials into the 6G European Research . Her professional tenure spans over 15 years in industrial R&D for International Telecom Industries (Infra & Device Vendors, Operators, Chipset Vendors) and European Research Centers (CNES, inria, Telecom Paris). Amira contributed as a Principal Engineer in the field of applied error correcting coding in wireless communication & standards, post quantum security and optics within Nokia Bell Labs, Alcatel Lucent, Huawei, and Orange. She contributed to 3GPP RAN1 Release 15 effort for the selection and the design of error correcting codes of 5G NR, as earlier to the upper layer decoding design of DVB-SH standard and to the specification of Alcatel Lucent LTE Modem. She has contributed to research projects and publications in collaboration with Professors at global top ranked universities and research centers in Europe, North America, India, China and the Middle East , and mentored post graduate students affiliated to these Institutions. The highest degree Amira holds is a PhD. degree Majoring in Information Theory from Institute Mines Telecom/Telecom Paris. Her PhD and Post-Doctoral research were granted by Orange Labs, CNES and Bell Labs.

Rastin Pries is a principal research lead at Nokia. He currently leads the German BMBF lighthouse project 6G-ANNA together with his colleague Marco Hoffmann. Rastin holds a master and Ph.D. degree in computer science from University of Wuerzburg, Germany. He has more than 10 years of experience in the telecommunication industry and joined Nokia in 2015. He was the consortium leader of several national and international research projects. His research focuses on everything related to extended reality such as edge computing, localization and mapping, and digital twinning. He is the author of numerous scientific conference and journal papers as well as patents.

Talk 5: Digital Modulation Schemes for ISAC: Overview and Challenges

Benjamin Nuss received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2012 and 2015, respectively. In 2021, he received the Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.E.E) degree from KIT and is currently working as a group leader for radar systems at the Institute of Radio Frequency Engineering and Electronics (IHE). His work focuses on the development of efficient future radar waveforms and the design of joint communication and sensing systems. His current research interests include orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing-based multiple-input multiple-output radar systems for future automotive and industrial applications.

Lucas Giroto de Oliveira received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering with a major in electronic systems from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), Juiz de Fora, Brazil, in 2017 and 2019, respectively. He is currently pursuing the Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.E.E.) degree at the Institute of Radio Frequency Engineering and Electronics (IHE), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany, where he is also a Research Associate. His research interests are in the areas of system design, signal processing, digital communication, and their applications to integrated radar sensing and communication systems and networks.

Giuseppe Gramegna

Talk 6: Challenges of mm-wave phased array for communication and sensing in D-Band

Giuseppe Gramegna

Technical Leader - RF / mm-wave Design, IMEC

Giuseppe Gramegna, MS (1993) and Ph.D (1996), started his career at imec and later worked on low-noise CMOS front-ends and GPS SoCs at STMicroelectronics until 2008. Following that, he held leadership positions at Nemerix, CSR, and Samsung, where he led the development of fully integrated GPS and BT/WiFi chipsets until 2015. He then moved to Huawei, where he contributed to the design of 5G mm-wave Radios. In 2018, he joined RFS as R&D Director. Since 2021, he is at imec, focusing his research on phased-array communication and sensing architectures for 6G. Giuseppe has served on the Technical Program Committee (TPC) for IEEE ESSCIRC from 2005 to 2018 and the TPC for ISSCC (RF sub-committee) from 2017 to 2018. Since 2021, he has been serving on the ISSCC TPC (Wireless sub-committee). He has co-authored numerous papers and patents in the field of communication and sensing architectures.

Stefan Brueck is Senior Director of the department ‘Modem Technology’ in Qualcomm Germany and General Manager of Qualcomm Germany GmbH. He and his team are working on PHY receiver design for 5G NR, LTE-Advanced Pro and Wifi 11ac/11ax. In addition, he is adjunct lecturer for '5G/6G Mobile Communications Systems' at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Stefan Brueck started his career in Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies in 1999. Since then he held R&D positions in Alcatel-Lucent and Qualcomm focusing on PHY and MAC layer technologies for GSM, UMTS/HSPA, LTE and now NR. Stefan Brueck studied mathematics and electrical engineering at TU Darmstadt, Germany and Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He received Dipl.-Math. and Dr.-Ing. degrees from TU Darmstadt in 1994 and 1999, respectively.

Dan Warren is Director of Communications Research at Samsung Research UK. He leads a team of researchers and Standards representatives working on cutting-edge mobile telecoms technology innovation, in the fields of Beyond 5G, 6G and the application of Artificial Intelligence. Dan applies his broad experience in the industry across technical, commercial, strategic and regulatory topics to steer Research towards relevant and commercially viable solutions. Dan is currently a Board member of 6G-IA, and a member of a number of External Advisory Boards for academic research projects.

Prior to joining Samsung, Dan held senior roles at Capita, GSMA, Vodafone and Nortel. Dan is a widely respected authority on Telecoms, having been included in Global Telecoms Business Magazine ‘Top 40 Under 40’ list for three years, and in Capacity Magazine’s ’20 Innovators to Watch’ in 2018. Dan holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Brunel University.

Talk 9: Considerations on waveforms and PHY design for 6G from the point of view of a network vendor

Expert in Physical Layer Design for Emerging Technologies, Ericsson Research

Miguel López received the Ph.D. degree in mathematics from The University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1996. In 1998, he joined Ericsson, in Stockholm, Sweden. He has been involved in signal processing, algorithm development, standardization of cellular technologies and IEEE 802.11 standardization. He currently holds the position of Expert in physical layer design at Ericsson Research, Ericsson GmbH, Herzogenrath, Germany. His research interests include signal processing for wireless communications, transmitter algorithms, receiver algorithms, and physical layer design.

Talk 10: Toward Digital Twin Networks: Tools and Early Results

Fayçal Aït Aoudia is a Senior Research Scientist at NVIDIA working on the convergence of wireless communications and machine learning. Before joining NVIDIA, he was a Research Scientist at Nokia Bell Labs, France. He is one of the maintainers and core developers of the Sionna open-source link-level simulator. He obtained the diploma degree in computer science from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, France, in 2014, and the PhD in signal processing from the University of Rennes 1, France, in 2017.

Talk 11: AI/ML based CSI-feedback in 5G-Advanced Rel-18 and 19

Wenqiang Tian received his B.S. degree from Fudan University in 2010 and his Ph. D. degree from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. He is currently a senior Standardization Researcher of Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd. He has participated in the 5G standardization work since 2016 and focused on the wireless AI studies in RAN1 and RAN4 since 3GPP Rel-18. Currently, he is leading OPPO's pre-research of AI based wireless communication system design towards 5G-A and 6G.

Talk 12: Energy Efficiency in Wireless Networks: Harnessing the Power of Hybrid Model-Based and Data-Driven Approaches

Renato Luís Garrido Cavalcante received the Electronics Engineering degree from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, São José dos Campos, Brazil, in 2002, and the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in communications and integrated systems from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, in 2006 and 2008, respectively. He is currently a Group Leader with the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, Germany, and a Lecturer with the Technical University of Berlin. He held appointments as a Research Fellow with the University of Southampton, Southampton, U.K., and as a Research Associate with the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, U.K. His interests include signal processing for distributed systems, multiagent systems, convex analysis, machine learning, and wireless communications. Dr. Cavalcante was a recipient of the Excellent Paper Award from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers in 2006 and the IEEE Signal Processing Society (Japan Chapter) Student Paper Award in 2008. He also co-authored a study that was the recipient of the Best Student Paper Award at the 13th IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications in 2012. From April 2003 to April 2008, he was a recipient of the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship.

Sergio Parolari

Talk 13: Latest prototyping, testing and standardization efforts for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces

Sergio Parolari

Senior Standardization Expert, ZTE

Sergio Parolari is a Standards Manager in ZTE's Wireless and Computing Product Planning department. He represents ZTE in 3GPP RAN groups, where he also served as RAN WG2 Vice-Chairman. He also supports ZTE product marketing activities for 5G in Europe. Sergio has 25+ years of experience in telecommunication technologies, in R&D and standardization environments. Before joining ZTE in 2010, he worked for Siemens and then Nokia, covering different positions, starting as System Engineer for the design of algorithms and procedures for mobile networks equipments, then as Standardization Specialist representing his company in different 3GPP and ETSI standard bodies and finally as Technical Product Manager driving the definition of new products for evolved 3G and LTE wireless systems. He is co-author of several patents in the area of mobile communication and of a number of scientific publications.

Sergio holds a M.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy.

Josef Eichinger

More than 20 years working in mobile radio research starting from 3G. During his research with Siemens he was responsible for the world first system with MIMO reaching more than 1 Gbps. Since 2013 working in the Huawei Munich Research Center on 5G and since 2022 on 6G with focus on verticals like V2x, I4.0, e-health and Robotics.

Founding and Board member of 5G-ACIA as well as chief delegate of Huawei since 2018, founding member of one6g.org and elected as WG4 Chair in the 2nd term. Since 2019 Member of the ZVEI Steering Committee for industrial communication. His responsibility as department head in the 6G research covers 6G Robotic, NTN and research on subTHz with leading contributions to the SNS TIMES project. His teams are also actively contributing to ETSI ISG RIS and ETSI ISG THz.

Christian Hoffmann

Talk 15: FR3 coexistence studies

Christian Hofmann

Assoicate Professor, University of the German Armed Forces Munich

Christian HOFMANN works as Assistant Professor for Secure Space Communications at the Chair of Signal Processing at the Bundeswehr University Munich. As an enthusiastic scientist and communications engineer, he has worked on several pioneering developments in communications technology and successfully founded a start-up company. In addition, Prof. Hofmann has advised various companies, institutes and agencies in studies and expert reports. He is a member of the VDE/ITG, the IEEE and the Research Center SPACE at his university. Prof. Hofmann is author and co-author of over 50 scientific publications and 5 patents.
