Automotive eCall testing

Comprehensive testing of automotive eCall functionality

eCall is an in-vehicle system (IVS) that, in the event of a serious accident, automatically transmits a minimum set of data (MSD) from the vehicle to the designated public safety answering point (PSAP), thereby reducing response times and minimizes fatalities.

Next generation (NG) eCall uses 4G/5G to enable fully-IP IMS-based communication, thereby allowing the circuit-switched legacy networks to be sunsetted. The data transfer in NG eCall uses different networks based on availability. In the future, non-terrestrial networks (NTN) will also be used for incidents in remote areas.

Using GNSS satellites, details such as the vehicle’s location and driving direction can be determined. This, combined with essential accident information - such as time of the incident, vehicle description and whether a vehicle rollover occurred - is sent to the PSAP.

Rohde & Schwarz’s comprehensive portfolio of test solutions from chipsets to end-to-end testing at vehicle level enable compliance with relevant eCall regulations.

Master your eCall testing challenges

  • Fulfilling various regional conformity standards (eCall, NG-eCall)
  • Ensuring 100% reliable functioning of eCall modules, both in sending out an alert and maintaining stable communications between rescue services and vehicle
  • Delivering accurate accident data (e.g., position, direction, vehicle details)
  • Keeping up with future technologies, such as the shift from GSM- and UTMS-based eCall to LTE- or 5G NR-based communications

Features of our eCall testing solutions

Our solutions address the entire ecosystem and integration chain for eCall testing - from individual chipsets to the entire vehicle. We cover a wide range of applications, such as:

  • eCall conformance: eCall device and system testing according to 2017/79 regulation and relevant standards
  • Emulation entire end-to-end system, including RAN, core and PSAP
  • NG eCall conformance: NG eCall device and system testing according to regulation and relevant standards
  • Position accuracy for eCall systems: GNSS positional accuracy in accordance with UN ECE R144 and EU 2017/79
  • eCall voice quality: eCall voice quality testing according to P.1140 and UN ECE R144
  • eCall in EMC environment: eCall testing according to upcoming UN ECE R10 specifications

With the R&S®CMX500 radio communication tester and R&S®SMBV100B vector signal generator, engineers can:

  • Emulate the 5G/LTE network, including the NG-eCall PSAP
  • Simulate GNSS signals
  • Establish a voice call
  • Test NG-eCall IVS under laboratory conditions

By using the R&S®SMBV100B for GNSS simulation, this setup can verify whether the IVS can trigger an NG eCall, select the right network, transmit the correct MSD and establish voice connection via a voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) or 5G call to the PSAP. The received MSD is available in both raw and decoded formats. This enables users to check transmitted values (such as position information and number of passengers) and confirm that the data is complete and correct - independent of a real-world mobile network.

Positioning information can be checked, and the 2D position error is shown on the map. This allows NG eCall developers to confirm that the GNSS position is accurately transmitted.
