RF Measurements - a course in applied spectrum and network analysis

The course aims at providing basic and practical knowledge of RF-measurements.

The course is offered by KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz.

Course main content

  • Introduction to radio communication (analog and digital modulation, antennas, link budget)
  • Basic concepts (characteristic impedance, wavelength, standing wave ratio (VSWR), decibel,)
  • Components of the measurement system
    - Passive components (cables, attenuators, power splitters, directional couplers, etc.)
    - Active Components (mixers and amplifiers)
  • Network analyzer (calibration, S-parameters, frequency sweep, power sweep, etc.
  • Noise and noise terminology (noise sources, SNR, SINAD, noise figure, noise temperature)
  • The spectrum analyzer (sweeping superheterodyne receiver, block diagram, the input attenuation reference level, span vs. sweep time vs. RBW, selectivity, zero-span, RBW vs. VBW, detector modes)
  • "Hands-on" - practical exercises and demonstrations
    - Spectrum analysis (first touch)
    - Spectrum analysis 1 (basic settings)
    - Network analysis (calibration and various types of measurements)
    - Spectrum analysis 2 (measurements and techniques)

Course disposition

The course blends practical measurements, exercises, and demonstrations with basic theory and conceptual understanding. There will be plenty of opportunities for questions and discussion with the teachers, and other students.

Eligibility

Professionals with experience from Radar, Radio or Telecommunication.

Teachers

Claes Beckman, KTH Communication Systems
Per Ängskog, KTH Electromagnetic Engineering

Both teachers have extensive practical and academic experience in Radio technology and RF measurements.

Claes Beckman is an antenna system engineering professor and the founding director of the research center wireless@kth. He has more than 30 years of experience from both academia and the wireless (radio and radar) industry. He is also the founder of the center for RF Measurement Research at the University of Gävle and has worked as an RF engineer at Ericsson and a research manager at Allgon.

Per Ängskog works as a researcher at the department of Electromagnetic Engineering. He has worked on the design of radio test equipment for mobile phones and base stations at Ericsson Radio Systems for 10 years. He has taught courses in RF measurement technology since the late 1990s, first at Ericsson and then at the University of Gävle where he also developed systems for radio measurements in industrial environments.
