Generation of realistic broadcast signals

Comprehensive testing of globally used broadcast equipment

When vector signal generators from Rohde & Schwarz are fitted with broadcast signal generation options, they provide innovative measurement solutions for testing broadcast receivers in R&D and production. They test on the physical layer and on the application layer using the most common broadcast transmission standards. Solutions from Rohde & Schwarz are ideal for characterization and validation, meeting customer performance, cost and scheduling needs.

Realistic broadcast signals

Depending on the requirements, broadcast signals can either be generated in real time by means of an FPGA or an arbitrary waveform application. The real-time coder generates an uninterrupted signal flow and is ideal for audio, video and bit error rate tests with long PRBS on the application layer. The arbitrary waveform generator with I/Q waveforms can be used to perform tests that focus mainly on the physical layer.

With the ability to generate signals for all relevant broadcast standards, the R&S®SMCV100B is ideal for lab and production testing.

Largest choice of broadcast standards

Easy adaption to regional or global requirements

The large number of available broadcast standards can be combined in a perfect matching configuration by  software options. Many signal generators from Rohde & Schwarz support broadcast standards as real-time, arbitrary waveform generator solutions or WinIQSIM2.

Real-time signal generation

Broadcast signals with real-time audio/video content and services

Real-time signal generation is available on dedicated Rohde & Schwarz signal generators and uses FPGA for a wide range of broadcast standards. This enables users to select standard related streams such as ETI, MPEG-2 TS and others with encoded audio/video content. Encoded audio and video signals from external sources can also be used. Broadcast real-time coders provide a constant, present signal without interruption when compared to arbitrary waveform generators.

Testing receiver application layers

Broadcast streaming libraries with audio, video and data content

Real-time coders use encoded audio, video and data content as their input signal. Such content enables broadcast receiver testing on the application layer by including the transmission channel and the lower layers. These end-to-end tests are important to ensure the user experience on the system level. A number of Rohde & Schwarz signal generators support these streaming libraries in addition to the real-time coders.

Testing broadcast receivers with I/Q waveforms

I/Q waveforms with R&S®WinIQSIM2™, waveform libraries and predefined signals

I/Q waveforms are ideal for user-friendly receiver testing. Depending on the broadcast standard and its bandwidth, these waveforms can be used for verification tests on the application layer such as HD Radio™ or for simple function tests on the physical layer. HD Radio™, XM Radio and predefined waveforms can be selected. R&S®WinIQSIM2™ offers several broadcast standards as well. I/Q waveforms are supported by a number of Rohde & Schwarz signal generators with arbitrary waveform generator functions.
