Modern waveforms for enhanced military communications

In today’s military missions, robust and secure communications are critical. Modern waveforms play a pivotal role in ensuring secure communications, providing high-quality voice and data transmission across the electromagnetic spectrum. Rohde & Schwarz offers a suite of state-of-the-art waveforms designed to meet these needs, ensuring jam-resistant, reliable communications.

Rohde & Schwarz provides advanced waveforms as part of the SOVERON radio family. These waveforms are based on cutting-edge technology and are designed for future scenarios, including joint and combined missions. Leveraging decades of experience in secure V/UHF band radiocommunications, Rohde & Schwarz has developed the SOVERON WAVE for enhanced performance and security.

Rohde & Schwarz key features for tactical waveforms:

  • Network-capable and secure
  • Providing low probability of detection (LPD)
  • Low probability of intercept (LPI)
  • Low probability of geolocation (LPG)
  • Jamming resistant through anti-jam capabilities

Advanced encryption technologies, including powerful frequency hopping, are used to outpace adversarial threat capabilities. These waveforms ensure secure and reliable voice and data transmission in near real-time, even in jammed environments. They balance spectral presence to avoid detection while maximizing data throughput and range, and incorporate mobile ad hoc networking to ensure stable communications within agile networks, enhancing situational awareness

Rohde & Schwarz waveforms benefits:

  • Customer-centric, featuring flexible functionalities tailored to specific needs and thereby reducing operational expenses (OPEX)
  • Future-proof, as the software-defined radio (SDR) ensures the system is adaptable to future requirements
  • Enhanced security is provided through software functions that support customized security architectures and enhance network throughput, bandwidth flexibility, and portability

SOVERON WAVE

SOVERON WAVE represents a significant advancement in military communications, designed for anti-access and area-denial environments. It allows for simultaneous voice and data transmission, optimizing spectral efficiency, and supports wide frequency coverage. The system is scalable to meet various mission requirements

SOVERON HF waveforms

Interoperability is crucial for multinational cooperation, and SOVERON HF radios support the most important waveforms, as outlined by NATO HF 4G House. The integrated design embeds the network layer, link layer, and physical layer within the radio, ensuring high reliability and low maintenance costs. Future waveforms that achieve market acceptance and become international standards can be supported through software updates.
Rohde & Schwarz leverages state-of-the-art technologies to provide advanced tactical communication systems, ensuring mission success in various operational environments. The SOVERON WAVE waveforms offer wide frequency coverage, scalability, and ease of use, providing robust, secure, and reliable communications for military operations across land, sea, and air.

Alliance for ESSOR - a4ESSOR

Rohde & Schwarz is the German industrial representative for the European Secure Software Defined Radio (ESSOR) project, which aims to develop a European wideband waveform for tactical interoperability in multinational operations. This project was approved by the German parliament in December 2019 as part of the Digitalization of Land Based Operations (D-LBO). Development partners include Thales, Leonardo, Indra, Radmor, and Bittium, who have been working collaboratively since 2008. The objective is to create an interoperable, robust, wideband radio waveform for connected armed forces.

The ESSOR program aims to improve the interoperability of mission-critical radio connectivity assets across various domains. It focuses on developing two main products: Software defined radios (SDR) terminals and waveforms, both designed based on a common architecture and methodology.

Safer together – Alliance for ESSOR (a4ESSOR S.A.S)

The waveforms comply with the international Software Communications Architecture (SCA) standard, which ensures software portability across different national military SDR platforms. ESSOR employs a structured approach that includes a set of rules and methodological guidelines for waveform development. This approach is known as the “BaseWF paradigm,” which consists of an initial Base Waveform phase followed by a Porting phase for implementation on national radio terminals.

ESSOR’s activities include co-developing tactical data link waveforms and terminals for various classes, such as EMIDS. The program also focuses on standardizing waveform development to facilitate porting on national radio platforms. This standardization covers several areas, including tactical ground communications (EHDRWF and ENBWF), air-ground-air communication (E3DWF), and satellite communication (ESATWF).
